  PUBLICATIONS - PERSONAL

Having written a number of legal books which, by their very nature, required constraint and discipline, the time finally came to allow my creative muse a complete reign and a chance to express itself. This has produced two novels thus far...and, no doubt, more will follow.

Along with this, being a grandfather, reading bedtime stories to the grandchildren took on a new meaning when I found answering some of their questions about the world around them created the opportunity to answer them in story form and, when my grandson, while in the garden with me and full of curiosity, noted with some concern, "Poppa, there's hole in your eugenia!" I had an instant title - the story followed, as have many more since.

Making of Travis   The Making of Travis
by David Bates
Published 2012

Life was never going to be simple for Travis Whittaker. Oxygen deprived at birth, he would never be as quick as others his age. Younger sister Jennifer instinctively tries to protect him, from predators, from his best friend Jace, and most of all from himself. But, who can these 1950s New Zealand children trust? Waynton Police pick through the pieces of a series of puzzling, seemingly unconnected incidents. They eventually find some answers. But do they, can they discover what really went into the making of Travis?

This is a dark, convincing, frighteningly believable tale of things no child should ever have to endure.
